In 2017 our garden was registered with the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens, an archive that is a collaboration between The Smithsonian and The Garden Club of America. Sally Larsen, then a member of the Dublin and Monadnock Garden Clubs in New Hampshire, both GCA affiliates, helped us navigate the complex submission.
Mary and I spent many weeks three years ago documenting the development of our garden. On the site, you’ll see the history of our garden, starting when we purchased a dilapidated Vermont farmhouse in December, 1983 that was built around 1790.
We submitted around 40 photographs of the fourteen “rooms” that now comprise the garden. These photos are cross-referenced on the Smithsonian site to a scaled map Mary drew of the garden. She also spent several weeks listing every variety of plant in the garden divided by the fourteen rooms.
